Don’t Do Today’s Work Tomorrow
Punctuality and preparedness are a very important characteristics to have in the business world at any level. This also applies for the music business (because there most certainly IS a business side for us musicians whether we like it or not). We all build up a track record, a base level of behavioral tendencies which throughout our lives forms many of our personal traits. Our individual views on time management for instance, or a person’s work ethic are both important factors in relationships whether business or personal.
When it comes to work or maybe a project where there are a lot of people or entities involved, I don’t subscribe to the concept of ‘leave if for tomorrow’. In many ways, I think this tendency or trait of ‘I’ll get to it tomorrow’ spans across their entire life in all areas. I am talking about something that is so common in society that there is a name for it, The “Chronically Late”.
To me this is the consequence of laziness. Work habits are formed early on and re-enforced throughout our lives. I absolutely believe that people can evolve and change, even go through dramatic life transformations but I also feel that is less common than the routine and conditioned lifelong procrastinators.
My point is this, stay up late and do whatever it takes to get your daily work done. Any time you say ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’ I believe that you are wasting part of today. Tomorrow you will likely have new responsibilities and duties so pushing yesterday’s work onto tomorrow is not going to leave you enough room for everything (yesterday’s and today’s work) to get done and done properly.
Now I am not suggesting that if you are somewhat of a procrastinator that you cannot be successful. These people most certainly can and are successful, it’s just that over long periods of time, like-minded people find each other or work best together so this type of personality might end up in sub-standard situations as a result. This is my opinion and are somewhat strong points of view so I welcome your comments.
To summarize; There are many formulas one must dedicate themselves to for overall life and business success. My advice to you is don’t start any NEW DAY with OLD WORK.
