19th-Century Violin-Form Glass Flask With Original Metal Strap
“Violin Flask,” “Violin Bottle,” or “Fiddle Flask”
Hand-blown glass
- No machine seams on the neck — correct for 19th century.
- Glass thickness, color, and slight asymmetry confirm hand-blown.
✔ Original copper/iron band and strap
- These metal straps were added by:
- Peddlers and travelers
- Sailors
- Street vendors
- Used to hang the flask on a belt or over a pack.
Most violin bottles today have lost their band entirely
Bohemia / Germany (most likely) – 1860–1890
Bohemian and German glasshouses produced large quantities of novelty-shape flasks like:
- Violin bottles
- Fish bottles
- Pipe bottles
- Book-shaped flasks
- Strong color
- Rare shape
- Surviving strap assembly
- Excellent overall condition
The forest green color is classic “Waldglas” (forest glass), made using wood ash and iron impurities.
